Subject: violent bucking

I have a 1988 900s 16v non-turbo 5 speed This car is cutting out badly. While driving you will suddenly loose power, if you press the accelerator the engine runs intermittently, idle then goes to rpms, cuts to idle then go to rpms, cuts to idle then goes to rpms, there can be a 1500 - 2500 rpm drop, then with the accelerator down the rpms go up the radically drop off. This causes the car to buck violently like a horse. If you shut the car off and on a random number of times the problem will eventually will go away. It will return, you never know when though, usually it happens while you are driving not at idle. I have unplugged each fuel injector and can not duplicate the behavior. There is also a strong smell of raw gas or poorly burned gas when this happens. The plugs have been replaced, rotor, and dist cap are both new? Any ideas?
