The companies pooled their engineering resources and developed a platform for a large FWD "executive" car. This project started in 1974. Since this was not a project within a single industrial group such as e.g. variants of VW and Ford, the companies involved could do what they wanted. The three Italian companies were independent at that time. Hence the type 4 cars are quite different under the skin; Saab developed their own rear suspension system for the 9000.
