I think seal shrinkage is a much more plausible mechanism. As for old engines having problems, well, that kinda true, the seals are old. And in a perfect world, when I buy an old car, the first thing I'd do is pull the engine and replace all the seals and gaskets. But this isn't a perfect world, and I'm a lazy SOB. When I buy an old car, I want to use it. Replacing seals is something I may (or may not) do over time. If switching oil to synth and exposing my existing 'problems' means the car becomes undrivable, then I'd rather delay that. -- Grunff
