Thanks for the input guys. The problem first started about 6 months after the engine was replaced. I assumed like the rest of you that the problem would be trapped air or the thermostat itself. Not finding any trapped air, I went for the stat. Who said that it would take 20 minutes? May be I am not used to the engineering put into a Saab, but it took me considerably longer than that. Still, if I had the right tools, it might have been quicker. Having changed the stat, it made no difference. During normal use, on the motorway or anywhere else that I don't get stuck in traffic, the gauge will only go to about 1/3 up the scale compared to 1/2 way before. I do not suspect the gauge as the electric fan still cuts in at around 2/3 up the scale as it did before all of this. My guessing at the moment, and this is where your combined experience should help, is the cold start valve is staying open, giving a richer mixture at all times and keeping the engine cooler, or a faulty temp sensor which again is keeping the car running too rich.
