Renault Laguna? They got four stars at the initial crash test, but were told they were pretty close to five. They made a few modifications, then got a second chance (what would you expect from a car manufacturer owned by the French state) and managed barely to squeeze their product into the five star cathegory as the first family saloon. They've been hollering about it ever since. Forget about the Laguna. Besides being ugly, it has French build quality - which means a lot, I can tell you. We used to say about French cars that when the winds were low, you could _hear_ the rust working it's way through the metal. A Swedish test recently concluded that although the passive safety level of the Laguna was adequate, the handling lacked a lot, and this car barely passed the famous Swedish Elk Test (tm) without the ESP (which is optional only on the Laguna). The two cars that got five stars at the initial test were the new Mercedes-Benz C-class and the Saab 9-3 Sports Sedan. The Saab got more points than the Merc, though, and thus is the safest family saloon available at present, according to EuroNCAP. And it's less pricey. -- Leif Tangen, Svelvik, Norway 1976 96L V4 1977 99 GLS 1986 900i 1992 900i 2,1 Griffin 1998 900S 1999 9-5 2,0t
