Subject: Re: use fossil or synthetic oil?

I bought my '88 9kT in May, '88. I've driven it hard since day 1 (e.g., was running it at 125 MPH while it still had its 30 day tag). The oil was first changed at 500 miles, the second time at 900, then at about 2k intervals thereafter -sometimes even less- always using Castrol mineral, and Fram filters, then realizing how bad they were, I switched to Bosch, or the blue Mann filters (now I use Bosch filters for Volvo's). About 3 years ago, with aprox. 120k, the turbo began to whine while the engine was cool. I switched from Castrol mineral to 10w30 Castrol full synthetic, and the whine stopped after a change or two. But then a more than slight leak started, plus, I often found myself coasting down a two-three mile stretch of regularly traveled, often busy section of road to get to the exit. Upon start-up from the stop sign, I was getting an annoying puff of blue smoke. I was telling this to a chick in my office who drag races. She suggested that I use thicker oil, and a synthetic blend. So I switched to 10w40, using 2 quarts of full Synthec, and the balance syn-blend, and the oil consumption is way down, and the smoke has completely ended. I still use Volvo filters (mainly Bosch), but change at 5k miles. The car has almost 170k miles, I run it hard, every day, and it continues to run strong (with the original turbo unit).
