They also keep adding "features" and convincing people that they need them. For example, navigation systems and "on-star" come to mind. The sales people are very good and people are now convinced that they need these items, to the tune of thousands of dollars. Yes, once in a blue moon it might come in handy. Me, I'll buy a map for $3 and take the risk that I never get so lost I can't find my way eventually to where I want to go. Maybe I'll even enjoy being lost and forced off my schedule (it's called experiencing life and taking responsibility for your destiny). Cell phones are a good example too. Look at how they suck people in: First, they convinced the masses that they _needed_ to be connected by a cell phone. Heaven forbid you should be "uncallable" while you're at the shopping mall. Now you _need_ a cell phone hook up in your car so that people can reach you when you're driving. How did we ever survive those thousands of years without cell phones ? Phone plans with 600 minutes or more are the norm. Well unless you're in business and use the phone for that, you've got a problem if you're on the phone 10 hours a month. Seriously, see a professional, you've got an addiction. Now the Sales people are trying to convince people that they _need_ text messaging. Let's get this straight: I have a cell phone that will do voice-to-voice communications, but now I want to step it back to text messages ? Again, once in a blue moon it might come in handy, perhaps when I'm in a meeting making that big business deal, I have my cell phone open, my partner needs to tell me something in 80 characters or less that will clinch the deal, I can't let my cell phone ring or be seen talking on it, but I can stare at it and spend five times the amount of time typing a text message in. Then again, Maybe not :-) </rant> My hat is off to the Sales and Advertising professionals. They seem to be able to convince people that they _need_ almost anything. Bob
