Not only do you have basic engine braking, but a properly revved downshift gives you a great deal of control in the corners. I've yet to drive an automatic that could downshift properly (noting that I have not tried out a Ferrari/F1 type automatic). When it's time to increase speed, you can be at a desirable RPM with a standard - the automatic can't possibly anticipate this and is at a sluggish disadvantage. I can see that automatics might be able to out perform a manual in a straight line to xx-mph, but I can't see them performing as well as a complete driving package (or being as much fun). Bob
