Salutations: In relation to my other post regarding window cable finally failing through age - wherein I pointed out that it was harbinger of things to come on my 312,000km 89 9000T CD - when I fired it up yesterday and started to pull off the curb - the drivers side front spring jumped the lower strut mount and broke - holing the plastic wheel well and spinning back to catch on the brake line plate (missing pretty much anything vital thankfully).. I had replaced the rear springs when I bought it - and the front end had long before developed that kuel 'lowered' look to accent the 'wedge' profile I like so very much.. It had gently bottomed a couple of times recently and I knew it was going to need some attention and at 312,000km on OEM springs - I feel very comfortable the springs had more than yeoman service - but - I post this little note out regarding it as a heads up for the other 'vintage' 9000 enthusiasts out here.. Had I been plowing down the highway (or even around the city) - it could well have been a very, very serious event rather than an amusing foot note.. Everyone figures the struts are still ok - and I'll use the opportunity to drop in fresh ball joints, bearings and a CV joint that is sounding rough.. The only hint I had that things were going bad was a couple of very gentle 'bottoms' last week (which probably hastened the failure) and the bang-grind-grind-grind alert when it pulled off the curb.. I checked it carefully and limped it at 15kmh over to a close by shop I use and even then - rubbed the sidewall enough to require a rebalance and will be looking for fresh winters next fall.. Thankfully - they were on their third season.. Anyway - as I said - heads up.. Check your ride height and start shopping for front springs if you are getting around the 300,000km mark.. -- J Dexter - webmaster - http://www.dexterdyne.org/ all tunes - no cookies no subscription no weather no ads no news no phone in - RealAudio 8+ Required - all the Time Radio Free Dexterdyne Top Tune o'be-do-da-day Bobby Darin - Beyond the Sea http://www.dexterdyne.org/888/012.RAM
