Subject: 1987 9000S Engine Temp Question

I just bought this yesterday (125K on it) & the average temp gauge position (under normal driving conditions) is a little over the halfway point. Is this normal for this vintage? I don't hear a fan kick in so maybe it's bad so I'll have to test it. Also for you owners of this particular model are there any quirks inherent with the design? This one's got an auto tranny & I hear that they are failure prone so any tips on how often to have it checked would be appreciated. Thanks for any advice. Mark
