Subject: Re: Automatic Tranny Question

Hi, I had my 1991 Saab 9000 tranny die early this year. I bought a lower mileage 1990 Saab 9000 to replace it and stripped the old one for parts. When it started to go I could not get the auto to shift between first and second while in D. I had to first put the car into Reverse for a second while at a stop, then shift into D, hear a click, then drive. After awhile, I put the car into 1, then "shifted" manually thru the gears - 1, 2, 3, D. Once into 4th and overdrive, I had no troubles - until another 7-9 months passed and the tranny "died" during a particularly cold winter night. I drove home the 5 miles going 15 mph at 2000 rpm and parked. I did all kinds of research and found that the best trans shop in my state refused to work on ANY kind of older ZF trans. I found that the older ZF trans (1990-1991, I think) had harder metal in one part of the trans, but softer metal in other mated parts of the trans. After 100,000 to 180,000 miles, this mix will cause the trans to fail. I called Eriksson Industries and got a price on a rebuilt or new ZF trans for the 1991 9000 - and also got a price from www.saabnet.com -- I researched all kinds of posts on Google and on Saabnet.com - and found that some people just replace the whole trans unless they are really confident of getting into the guts of the gearbox and/or trans. My biggest advice is: 1A. surf Saabnet.com 1B. surf thesaabsite.com - http://www.thesaabsite.com/93/93faqs.htm 2. dig around on erikssonindustries.com - call them, too 3. get the trans fluid replaced 4. get the trans filter replaced and new seals put in 5. check to see if any pink trans fluid is appearing in the coolant reservoir - if it has a pink sheen on the surface, you may have some cross leakage, which will eat away at the trans metal Good luck! markcharlesnopsamv.net (MarkC) wrote in message news:<9592-3EC5CFA4-504nopsamefull-2173.public.lawson.webtv.net>... > I just bought an '87 9000S with 125K.
