Hi Mike, I have the same car, with the 5spd. & V6 as well. Apparently, it is not an uncommon occurrance, and not cheap to repair. I thought I had a similar problem, and even my mechanic was convinced. However, during a service to replace the thermostat(bloody complicated business. ie.expensive), it was discovered that the valve cover gaskets were seriously leaking, which made it look as if the seal between the tranny and the engine was shot. You may want to rule that out before you have any work done.
