All businesses hire trainees. Few charge _the customer_ more money when one of them does the job. The business pays for the low productivity of the trainee. Imagine if the business said "well, we usually charge $50, but we have a new trainee, so I have to charge you $80." I think that point is moot. >You wouldn't expect the dealer to penalize you for a new/tranee mechanic, >why should you expect to penalize the dealership for hiring an adept one? I think the issue here is that they allege to charge "by the hour" (even printing that on the invoice and displaying a "hourly rate" in the shop area) yet are actually quoting and billing by a flat rate per job. It's a bit of a distortion, but not outright fraud. <rant> What really burns me is when they double charge under flat rate. Short version of a story... mechanic is doing some work on my car and sees a little seepage around the oil pan gasket. He offers to give me a quote on it. He quotes me the price (its about 4 hours of labor on this car) and he says "we have to pull the front pipe off to do this. If it breaks, we'll have to replace that. That's a 2 hour job. But, since we are already doing the other work, I'll only add in a hour to do the front pipe". For those that miss the point, the oil pan job already involves removing and reinstalling the front pipe, but he's going to charge me an hour extra to do it (per the flat rate) to do it. He even thinks he's a great guy since he's only charging me an hour to do a job I'm already paying for. Needless to say, I've never gone back for any work and I had someone else do the pan for me.
