I did need it, and so did my wife. Saab safety was VERY nice to have when a drunk ran a red light at 45 mph and T-boned the driver's side door of my '86 900 without ever hitting the brakes. Knocked my car off the road and into the side of a brick building. His Buick and my Saab were totalled. He went to the hospital and jail, in that order. I walked away without a scratch and bought a '92 9000. That one served us well until a year ago, when a woman talking on a cell phone ran a stop sign in a Chevy van and T-boned my wife on the rear driver's side door. Knocked her off the road into a tree. The Saab was bent at a 30-degree angle, totalled. My wife was unhurt. We bought a 9-3. Hopefully this one doesn't have a bulls-eye painted on the side, but it's a comfort to know the car offers good protection if another fool crosses our path. Having spent a fair amount of time in rusty old beetles and Japanese econo-cans, I shudder to think how things would have turned out had we been driving less sturdy cars when the unexpected happened. To each his own, but it only takes one idiot to turn Saab's crash rating/safety factor from "nice to have" into "life or death."
