Subject: 900C tailgate removal

I am restoring a 1987 900S and want to detach the tailgate for better access fighting rust and having it painted. I can figure out mechanically how to take it off but am worried about the 2 cable ducts between the roof and the facing tailgate topside. These carry the wires for the rear window heater, central locking actuator, fog light(s) and licenceplate lighting. According to the SAAB shop manual I should just cut the wires where they come out of the roof and crimp them back together when i'm putting it all together again. Sounds un-SAABish to me, anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks, Wil.!
