Perhaps having the other party in the coversation at the physical location increases the chance that one of them will be paying attention to what an appropriate volume is. Or perhaps one does not want to hear the loud ringing while in a movie theather, concert, restaurant, or shopping or... Noise pollution is obnoxious whatever the source and even if only a minority of cell phone uses are a problem, they're a very visible problem. Bill
