Orca (my '89 900 T8S) has been seen to by the mechanics and she's better now. The problem was a duff auxiliary air valve and a replacement was sourced from Bosch. She fires up fine now, cold or warm and idle is bang-on. Thank you all for your suggestions. I've learned a lot about how all that stuff fits together and how each part affects the whole.
