If the problem causing check engine light is not fairly obvious, then the error code can be read by Saab diagnostic equipment. (I know you know that). Hence the error can be traced systematically and eliminated. There are only so many possibilities. That's what happened in my case anyway. The AC is presumably non Saab sourced and is sometimes better fixed by an AC specialist, whereas Saab consider it as an 'all or nothing' component. I've never had rattles in my 9000 CSE, but had some very annoying rattles in my FIAT Croma, some were related to the rear bench locking mechanism.
