Honda and Toyota market cars up to $30000, well above where Saab's 9-3 series prices start. Acuras and Lexus' start in the mid-20s and climb way up from there. Both companies market models that compete with Saab, model for model. At $25K, a Saab 9-3 buyer could also choose a top-of the line Saturn V6, a good Toyota Camry or Solara, A Honda Accord or an Acura sport coupe, a midsized Lexus, a Volvo or VW, or even a midsized Mercedes. This is quite a range. It's not just Saab. EVERY auto mfgr in the US has to beat Honda and Toyota now. Toyota has now passed Daimler-Chrysler as one of our top three MFGrs. Whatever the latest US marketing demographics might indicate Saab's typical buyers are; they don't tell the whole story any more. While Saab sells to a specialized segment; Honda and Toyota sell across all market segments. Both companies likely sell even more cars to Saab's specialized segment as well, even though averaging their demographic data might cover up that fact. ... Saab will not be out of trouble in the US until they find a way to compete successfully with these two Japanese companies. mb
