I bet that really sucks! (Sorry, I just could not resist:-)) It is too late, but did you try to retrieve the plastic pieces from the vacuum cleaner system? You could have glued them back on. You may try fabricating pieces of plastic - print icons on a ink jet or laser printer, laminate it and glue the laminate to a piece of properly shaped Plexiglas, and finally glue the Plexiglas to the buttons.
