Subject: Saab vs.Honda

All this talk of Saab quality and comparisons to other brands like Honda made me have to throw my 2 cents in here. I own both. I have a 1988 Saab 900 and a 1988 Honda Civic LX. Both have nearly 200K miles on them, both are running but have the usual rust and dents that come with 15 years of New England driving. For dependability, neither of them have ever left me stranded anywhere. For safety, my wife was in an accident with a previous Honda, spare tire came off a truck going the other direction on the highway, and took the Honda's roof off, police said she would have been killed if not for the seat belt and the construction of the car. Thnakfully I have not been in an accident with my Saab, but a good friend's son was. Head on collision, the police said that the "crumple zone" construction of the Saab saved him, (that and the seat belts). For driving comfort, I have to say the Honda is more comfortable, but comfort is going to vary on the driver's physical size and preferences. The Saab gets more attention, and I think it looks cooler. Working on the cars, the Saab wins hands down. The Honda is ver hard to work on, as everything is crammed under the hood, the Saab has lots of room to swing a wrench without scraping one's knuckles. There are lemons in every brand, but I think getting to know the vehicle, doing preventative maintenance, and staying on top of normal wear and tear will extend any car's life. James F.
