Sounds like the EGR on my 16v is the same as yours, they had a look and said, " we can get a lot more out if we whip that off". I asked about emissions probs, and they said "Will probably pass easier". BTW, as your is pre-92, it doesn't need a cat, and has to only reach 3.5% CO and 1200ppm Hydrocarbons to pass. My battered old Skoda Estelle managed that with a very worn Jikov 12 year old Jikov carb that leaked and rattled like a mad thing.
