I had to really bang it shut hard which obviously was not a good thing. In the end I found that there is a spring which returns the locking lever into the "ready" position, and mine had broken. I extracted the remaining 7/8ths of the spring and remade it by a bit of bending here and there. I then found it impossible to get one end affixed so I gave up and went to the scrap(junk) yard for another latch (£5/$10).
