From what you said, it suggests the hose has come off the wastegate actuator, this happened on my Volvo a couple years ago, the boost would skyrocket into the red with an enormous rush of power, but then the overboost switch would cut off the fuel. It felt rather violent when this happened but Saab may well use a somewhat different system.
