Congrats on your new ride. I also have an '87 T16 (and an '88 900 SPG). As for the carpet getting wet, there is a drain tube that comes off the bottom of the outside-air-intake/A/C box on the firewall. Right under the vent slots in the hood is a little triangular projection ("box") where the vent system brings in fresh air and the A/C chiller sits, and down at the bottom of this "box" is a groove leading to a drain hose that is supposed to drain out through the fender shield by the right-side front wheel. It can be difficult to get your hand, etc down in there, but check for leaves, etc to be obstructing the flow and causing water to build up and run into the vent system, and runs out on the slope of the footwell. Also, make sure the hose is not kinked or obstructed between the bottom of the "box" and the fender shielding.
