When the magnetic clutch on the compressor is engaged, there is a constant growl from the compressor which I assume is normal although, when the car went in for an A/C service at my local main dealer, they adjusted the mounting of the compressor in some way which greatly reduced the sound. The noise could also be the serpentine drive belt slipping (which my car seems to do in certain conditions). When the A/C compressor is engaged, many electrical accessories are putting load on the alternator, and the steering pump is labouring (all driven from the same belt IIRC), it seems to slip to a small degree creating a pretty loud growling sound - far louder than the compressor's growl in normal operation. Only lasts for about 4 or 5 seconds at a time though (until the compressor disengages). The car has been in for Saab Dealer services since, and this behaviour was mentioned to them, but it still persists so I presume it is normal! HTH, Tim.
