In the late 1980s/early 1990s there was a Pontiac Le Mans (if I remember rightly) which was essentially the Astra of the same period adapted for the US. Around the same time I remember renting a Pontiac in Canada (can't remember the model) which seemed to be based on the European model sold in the mid-to-late 1980s as a Cavalier in the UK (Opel Ascona in other European countries). So if there are parts in common between Saabs and Pontiacs it's most likely a sign of them both being based on Opel/Vauxhall models Martin
