The typical symptom is a squeal when you first start the car (cold engine) which goes away quickly at first, and progressively less quickly as it gets worse. I was thinking that maybe there is no clutch involvement, and the squealing appears in first gear simply because that's where you are when you rev the engine for the first time after starting it. Subsequently the pulley gets hot (quickly), and stops squealing. This is just a theory of course. Maybe you could try reving the engine a bit in neutral right after you start the car, and see if it still happens? Does anyone else care to offer competing theories? John
