In the Classic 900 model it was the engine vacuum. If you were not accelerating (low vacuum) the light would come on if you not in 5th gear. If you stayed in the same gear and accelerated (high vacuum) the light would go out. It does not work as a "downshift" indicator - you have to be smart enough to figure that one out yourself.
