Yes, it's likely to be worn, but the symptoms you describe don't match that as being the problem for your car. That only adds a bit of slop at the top of the stroke, it doesn't change things dramatically as you're describing. Might be as easy as opening the bleeder nipple on the slave cylinder, letting the fluid (and hopefully, bubbles) escape there, while keeping the reservoir topped off. Let it run until it comes out clear rather than the black crud that's in there. Either way that won't hurt to do, and it's likely to fix your problem. If not, there are a couple other options.
