The clips have a long pin attached to them that is inserted through the carpet up close to the seat. The business end of the clip consists of a pair of jaws that clamps down on the carpet to keep it in place. I've had them quite a few years and moved them to a couple of different cars. The only thing to beware of is that you don't shove the pin through any hidden cables that might be lurking under the carpet. Maybe not quite what you're looking for, but a possible option...
