What your tech said is consistent with my experience. When I picked up my '06 SC 2.0T two yrs ago this wk, I noticed that the battery cover & hold-down was loose. When it was corrected, I asked why the battery was a SAAB-USA battery since I could not imagine that GM would go to the expense of shipping US-made batteries to Trollhattan. The tech said that their practice is to replace most OEM batteries during prep to avoid any downstream issues. Works for me -- my car has been flawless since delivery (with the minor exception of warped plastic rear window trim, which sounds pretty common....).
