I have an '06 9-3 SC 2.0T (uppercase T) w/ AT and my daughter has a '00 9-5 SC 2.3t (lowercase t) w/ a 5sp tranny. I've driven her car extensively, hauling her kids and/or malamutes, tuning her car, etc. The 9-3 is quicker under most circumstances and definitely at altitude in the Sierras, in spite of the slushbox. The performance difference could be attributed to the difference in weight (~300 lbs), but more likely to the respective turbo set-ups. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 9-3 with the high pressure turbo.
The major advantage her 9-5 has over my 9-3 is cargo space. While volume specs are comparable, sq.footage favors the 9-5, as you might expect. She can haul her malamutes comfortably in the cargo space, while I have to lay at least one seatback down to accommodate my pair of mals.
