We run a fairly low labor rate, we don't have too much shop overhead and run a pretty lean parts stock, there is a WorldPac distributor about a mile from our shop that I get parts from about 45 mins after I order them, and I get dealer parts in stock delivered same day.
We charge $80, which is mid-range for independent shops in our area, but we still have nearly full dealer capability for diagnostics and labor for SAABs, so our clientele comes to expect pricing to reflect that.
We offer a fix for the sliding yoke front caliper *clunk* when the guide tracks wear out that's a chopped up door hinge from Home Depot for $60 rather than replacing the caliper - and those customers upgrade to 9-5's and Sport Sedans and expect the same sort of service that will get the car how they want it without having to shell out dealer prices, so that's the sort of experimenting that I am doing on the S.S.'s, since it's looking more and more to us on the later end of the service line that these are gonna keep going downhill.
We bought a beat-to-$%#$ '03 Linear to practice on and try some of these backyard fixes so we can do that sort of thing if necessary for the S.S.'s.
I have seen some scary things on the Sport Sedans already, some of our customers are really hard on cars, and it's up to us to try to keep it as affordable as possible to keep owning them.
Best,
Drew
