I guess this is kind of the Uber class in programming and I don't think it is a straight answer for it.
It could very well be that the virgin ECU is capable to mate to any car but that it programs some hard data to certain portions of the ECU making it impossible to get it to work in a car of wrong year or wrong engine configuration when used.
Since I work on Volvo's as well, that is part of the deal with them. Some ECU's (or modules as they call them) you can move over to another car a reload the drivers to get it to work. Other ECU's, you only have a one shot deal to get it right and then it is mated to that car only.
But it is cases out there where they have managed to find a used ECU that matches the year, model and engine configuration and got it to work sort of but it might show up wrong VIN when you scan the car.
It is still a hit and miss and no one can give a straight answer on the Volvo's as well.
