Hit it on the head, I think that is the way it's going to end up being, it'll be like finding the right part number LH ECU for the classics, since there were changes every few years for a while there.
This might be the kind of thing where the more adventurous performance tuners can come in handy for us independent mechanics. I know that a couple of the places who do ECU tuning for the Sport Sedans can write different engine config files and then can the correct security protocol into the ECU so that when it comes in the mail it's already programmed to belong to the car, and it's a plug-and-play deal, sort of like how LostSaabKeys [dot] com provides 'virginized' or pre-programmed CIM and TWICE packages so that you can have a hope of fixing it yourself in your driveway without needing a Tech2.
Will have to experiment with some of them for that, they'd have no problem flashing stock run files into them.
