In the past I've always done an oil change at 1,000 to 1,500 on new cars and my 2001 9-3 is going strong at 151,000 miles with no engine issues.
I'm debating doing the same thing with my 2010 9-3 but I'm beginning to think that if metal contamination is the concern, then changing the oil filter would make more sense, and I'll hold off on the oil until 5,000 miles. The car has seen very little in the way of stop and go short trip driving so breakdown of the oil additives is unlikely.
I have about 2,000 miles now and I think I'll be doing the filter in the next few days. I don't really think the oil is going to degrade (wear out) faster because the engine is new, and I'll be relying on the filter to remove any break in debris in the oil.
It would also break my cheapskate heart to throw away 6 quarts of high quality sythetic oil that is still the color of honey !
