I had a '99 9-3 that I replaced with an '07 combi when I handed the old one down to my son. Both are manuals. Put about 130K on the '99 and now have about 65K on the '07. The NG seems more reliable - I've had no major issues with it, but had the head gasket and heat control knob problems and some other issues with the OG, most fixed under warranty. The NG does eat rear brakes, but I haven't tried the new style pads in the rear. Handling on the NG is much better than the OG but turning circle is wider. Acceleration on the NG is better, as is gas mileage - I get 33 - 35 mpg at 70 mph, a couple mpg better than the OG. Less wind noise in the NG. My wife thinks the NG is much more comfortable, I somewhat prefer the more upright seating position in the OG, and think the seats in the OG were more comfortable (or maybe there's more of me to fit in the NG seats :-). The dual zone climate control and memory seat/mirrors in the NG are a godsend in a family with a 6' transplanted Minnesotan and a 5' native Californian. Xenon headlights in the NG are appreciated by old eyes. I like the NG styling and there's lots of room in the combi. My wife wants something styled like the OG 900. Overall, I like the '07 better than the '99. You should drive some NGs.

Ron
