I guess I had a combination of problems. Key 1 wouldn't start the car, key 2 did. Then a day later I got the message about the steering lock malfunction when using both keys. Removed fuses 1 and 2 (drivers side on my 2004 9-3 Linear) and you guessed it. Both keys now start the car. The dealer told us after putting it in their test equipment, one key bad, one not. Guess not! Since those fobs are real hard to come by now, as they are backordered. Feeling very relieved.

I do notice now that when I put the key in, I don't hear the steering lock solenoid engage. I can also move the steering wheel when the key is out.

Should I be proactive and just go ahead and replace the ISM? This seems to be the most likely cause base on all the information I've found.
