I bought a 2010 XWD manual transmission in January. I didn't take it in the snow last winter but now have snow tires and am looking forward to seeing how it does this wnter.
With 9000+ miles 80% to 90% highway driving (mostly 65-75 mph)in summer temperatures I'm getting 30 - 31 mpg. Before break in and winter temperatures I was getting 28-29 mpg with same driving. I got as good as 35 mpg for a 100 mile all highway trip this summer at 70 - 75 mph. It's possible I had the wind at my back !
Power is adequate. 1st gear is a granny gear which should be good in the snow, but not good for stop light drag racing. 2nd thru 5th gear provide good acceleration but 2nd gear will bog down if you try pulling away from a stop sign under 10 mph. 6th gear is for highway cruising, you can use it from 45 mph plus if you are on level ground and don't need to accelerate. Mid grade gas seems to make for livlier acceleration, but I have used mostly regular. It will climb most hills in 6th gear at 65+ mph. SID mpg calculations are within+/- .5 mpg based on actual calculations based on fill up gallons.
The xwd electronic power distribution makes a big difference in handling compared to my 2001 base model 9-3. Much less oversteer/body roll and very stable cornering.
Overall I like the car. I wish it was a hatchback. Considering discount off MSRP ($10,000+) it was a great value. I hope Saab is around to provide the free maintenance and warranty.
