I am following up on this question I posted earlier to see if anyone had more thoughts. I realize that discussions about my car actually belongs in the older Saab forum, but this forum has been much more active in responding, so I thought I would start here.
So, the update...
What I am noticing is that the brake power (ability to stop the car) is very weak when the car first starts. If I let it sit for a while idling then the brakes are OK. So far the mechanic has replace the booster, little hose that goes from the booster to some other thing on the top of the engine (sorry about the lack of vocabulary), has bled the brakes multiple times. He is now talking about replacing the brake lines. I am about to give up on him and go to another shop, but I am already out a bunch of money and he actually said he will try to fix it with no additional cost to me (except if it is the lines then I would have to pay for that). I have had my car to him more that 5 or 6 times.
What should I do? Go to a new mechanic and be ready to shell out more money? Drive as is - since once the car warms up brakes seem fine? Go back to this guy and have the lines replaced?
I may be quickly approaching the bluebook value for this car on the repair...
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
========== Old posting ====================
2000 9-3 SE with 85000 miles. Recently after resurfacing the rotor (due to wobbly feel when braking), the brakes lost its power. That is to say, after the car has been parked for a while, the first several times the brakes are used, it is very difficult to stop. The pedal is not squishy nor does it sink, but it is hard. After some diagnosis (including a smoke test on the brake system) my mechanic said there was a small leak in the booster. It was replaced with an OEM part at a considerable expense, but I am still having the same problem, only slightly improved. Now, it only takes one pump after starting to have proper "grip". Any ideas on what may be happening? I plan to take the car back, but some suggestions on what he should be looking for would be greatly appreciated.
