Unpleasant seat heater failure – longish ramble..

Over the holidays my driver’s seat heater shorted out and burnt several nice holes in the leatherish cover. Believe me, there was not much animal fight back, the holes look like someone took a lighter to plastic. I am sick, and of course a couple of months out of warranty (for what that would be worth) in the middle of winter.
Questions, the bloody thing still works, (but is very hot around the damaged area) is it safe to use? I’m thinking not.
Several weeks ago I was at my Dealer, who was still in shock over the bankruptcy and asked for a grind to be ordered, nothing as of yet. They did feel that their trim guy could repair the cover to a satisfactory standard. I am starting to think that any repair to this material could not possibly stand up to wear in the bolster area and the very high heat in these seats. I’ve also search through here and found comments about the foam being burnt. So a proper repair could be in the vicinity of $1500, if the parts can even be sourced. I am thinking about claiming this to insurance – thoughts??. Worse case, would any other heater grid work?(Buick)
Although I traded my 05 on this 08 a little earlier than I would have normally, I approached the Dealer to trade for one of the several vehicles left on the lot, (warranty be dammed, the SS is a solid car) that’s how upset I was, and he was not entertaining offers. So I may be keeping this one for a while….what would you do???
