My drift was for you to not throw parts at the car but do some testing and narrow it down.
For us it would be easier since we can hear the difference between a starter not engaging and an engine freewheeling from a broken chain.
If it is the chain that broke or skipped teeth on the sprockets due to a failed tensioner, you for sure have a couple of bent valves and the cylinder head has to come off.
The problem ahead is to figure that out.
Valve cover has to be removed and if you see the chain missing or being very sloppy on the sprockets, you know something happened and you have to think about if you want to tackle it yourself, pay someone or sell the car as is.
It takes a couple of special tools to hold the cams in place so it won't be easy for an untrained eye to see if the cams are out of time or not if chain is still there.
