2005 & 2003 (arc/linear) rear brake pad retaining clip

2 cars - doing rear brakes on both. 2005 9-3Arc and 2003 9-3Linear.
That wire clip on the outside of the rear caliper on both my 2005 and 2003 9-3's. Very stuck in there. Any thoughts on how to get that without breaking it? I started with the 2005, and broke the clip in the hole on both sides. Going to have to hammer it in to make it flat, and drill it out. Grrr.
I tried penetrating oil and PB Blaster to make it be unseized - no luck. Get a vice grip on it, and wiggle it enough - eventually the metal fatigues and just breaks.
Any good tricks before I drill out the remains of the old clip on the 2005 to finish that job...and before I start on the 2003?
For anyone searching for the Harbor Freight piston compression kit - the largest kit from Harbor Freight does indeed have the proper attachment and works perfectly to turn the piston back in. Harbor Freight number 69053. With a 20% off coupon, it was $31.
