There are 2 versions of the xwd system out there. The aero, turbo x, and 9-3x models had the electronic limited slip diffetial and that's the only one I have read about with differential problems. The base model 9-3xwd has a conventional diffential in the rear and I haven't read of any issues with it, but it is only on the 2.0T engine.
I have 21,000 trouble free miles on my 2010 9-3xwd 6speed and I haven't encountered any wheel slip issues that I thought would make the elsd desirable.
I think the apparent slowness off the line with xwd system is due the system shifting a majority of the power to the rear when it senses the body pitch to the rear with an agressive start. The rear drive system works with a hydraulic pump and wet clutch pack that seems to take a small amount of time to react.
