Oil color is not a reliable indication of the state of the oil. The better synthetics seem to get darker quicker because they catch and hold the crankcase byproducts of combustion better and tend to disolve any varnish already in the engine.
I am curious as to how GM went from an A3/B3 oil, which limits choice to relatively few oils of either 0W-30 or 0W-40 weight, to any old 5W-30. I don't think anything changed on the engine, but perhaps the durability results from the field on the B207 influenced them to relax the specifications on the oil. As far a GM is concerned, they only needed to keep the sluge at bay until the car ran out of warranty. As the owner of the car you need to make your own judgement as it relates to your engine life expectations.
