Thanks everyone for the replies. It is good the hear that none of you really see transmission problems on these cars, I would have hard time swallowing a tranny replace at 100K.
I have driven cars that had a worn out clutch, so I know what that feels like. I drove this car two weeks earlier and all was well. It is hard to believe the clutch had a catastrophic failure and let go without any noise.
I have been thinking more about this and everyone's comments, and my guess now is the shift lever mechanism is to blame. Although when I looked at the top of the tranny, and my wife was working the shift lever in the car, I could see the shift mechanism cables pushing and pulling the bell crank on the tranny input shaft, perhaps it was not pushing and pulling the bell crank far enough so that the syncros were being actuated. The shift lever did feel very loose and "flimsy". When I said it would pop out of gear, I could have better described it as the lever "flopped" out of position (with clutch pedal still to the floor).
One can usually feel and/and or hear the syncros engaging with a manual shift transmission. I was feeling none of that. So my guess is that something failed in the shift lever mechanism or the cable system so that the tranny input shaft is not getting the proper motions to work the shift forks and syncros inside.
It is good to have some feedback to consider ahead of time so I am better prepared to talk with the shop. I will follow up with the mechanic's diagnosis.
