Every 8,000 for me Posted by Sondeen [Email] (#796) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Sondeen) on Wed, 24 Jun 2015 10:00:02 In Reply to: Low-mileage driver, Mobil 1 - schedule for oil changes?, 900Fun, Tue, 23 Jun 2015 15:22:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We have an 2006SC and a 2001 OG9-3.
For the OG9-3 I am much more concerned about long change intervals due to the historical sludge problems with this model of car. 5,000 miles is my max interval, and often I change earlier than that if the one year mark comes up.
For the 06SC, my oil change intervals have been bewteen 7,500 and 9,000 miles, probably about 8,000 miles on average, and I always use M1 0W-40. It often depends on personal time constraints, if we have a long trip coming up soon, etc. We have never passed the one year mark before hitting the mileage interval.
I considered the risks, costs and benefits of various intervals.
I picked my interval considering:
-our plan to keep the car for many more years,
-the 10,000 mile interval in the owners manual,
-known oil sludge problems with other similar 4 cyl. turbo engines in other models,
-the cost, time, & waste stream associated with a very conservative short interval like 5,000 mi.
-the fact that our 2.0 engine holds almost 6.5 qt.s of oil which certainly slows the overall deterioration rate of the oil
-the fact that we put on a lot of miles with long trips on the highway, and don't commute in heavy traffic or take the car to track days, etc.
-and the car's computerized oil monitor recomendations.
Regarding the oil monitor in the car, I keep tabs on it, but I don't reset it in synch with my oil changes. I prefer to know what the car thinks the max change interval should be based on our driving habits. So I reset it when it gets down below 5% "goodness", then extrapolate a milage for 100% of the oil goodness used up. Typically the computer says the maximum interval is between 11,000 to 12,000 miles.
