Wow, thanks for all the info. I have never heard of stepper motors (now you know my low baseline of knowledge here). The mechanic did not say he ran the gauge up and down with the Tech 2. He just checked the tank level at half and at full (it read correctly on Tech 2). It sounds like 'running the gauge' would be to give the full range of gas level signal (resistance I believe) to the gauge and see if the gauge reacts accordingly? If that fails, it's the stepper motors within the gauge? Worth a test. Will he know what running the gauge means and how to do it? I like the idea of a rebuild, and I am near Boston, so I could go to BBA. Otherwise, I could replace the whole gauge cluster, which is either expensive (for a new cluster), or it might be tough to find one with less than 67k miles (to roll forward). Alternate idea/question -- can I replace just the Fuel/Temp/Boost section of the gauge cluster? and would that include new stepper motors? sorry for the basic questions.
