Lifetime coolant... some explanations Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Tue, 24 Jan 2017 19:03:42 In Reply to: 2008 was GM Ownership and Dex-Cool, MI-Roger [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 23 Jan 2017 03:22:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The lifetime coolant was designed some time ago to last the life of the car. Then, 12 or 15 years later, every body found that it wasn't the case. Sludge and grime and rust and whatnot was found in the cooling system of many cars. The problem was related to the additives that were supposed to prevent corrosion and other calamities did their job but for a finite amount of time.
So now, coolant is a 10 years/150k miles fluid. Or so it is supposed to be. But many dealers will do it sooner, you know, for preventative maintenance (or was it for their bottom line ?)
Since it is already done, it will probably outlast your ownership. Just check to see the color in the expansion tank. Proper GM DexCool is orange. If it's not, then you may want to do it in a couple years from now as the shorter life regular coolant is to be replaced each 2 years. Often this short life fluid is blue or green or yellow in color.
